The Text-to-Speech Update (Upheaval Alpha Version 0.0.17)
The Text-to-Speech Update (0.0.17) adds built-in text-to-speech to Upheaval’s graphical version, enabling better accessibility for blind players, as well as full controller and keyboard support and new quality of life features to help you find where you want to go! Try it out on itch.io or on Steam. I hope you enjoy! 🥳
If you own the alpha version, download the new update from itch.io or Google Play. To get an email when the full game is done, wishlist Upheaval on Steam.
After you download the update, start a new game to try out the new content. If you want a completely fresh experience, clear everything using the “Delete all save data” option in Settings!
SPOILERS MAY BE AHEAD! TAKE CARE!
Highlights from this update
- Text-to-speech is available in the graphical versions for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android! You can read all about it and other accessibility features on Upheaval’s new accessibility info page. When text-to-speech is activated, a screen shows up telling you how to use it. To activate text-to-speech, shortcuts are:
- Keyboard: Shift + T
- Controller: Left stick button + Right stick button (together)
- Touchscreen: Triple tap with three fingers
- Full keyboard and controller support have been added. Button prompts for Xbox and Playstation controllers have been added, but other controllers may work as well. Configuration menus to remap controls will be added in a future version; for now all controls are hardcoded, and you can see what different buttons do here.
- New random events in town should give players more opportunities to find adventures to go on. Events happen about 6 days apart, and each one is a potential adventure or expedition that a player can go on to get powerful magic items, help an NPC, get more information, or possibly all three. 😄

Detailed changes
Special thanks to Chad, Tuan, and Aziz for playtesting this release! Your help is really appreciated. ❤
Additions:
- Added text-to-speech option in settings, which accepts inputs from your mouse, keyboard, Xbox controller, Playstation controller, and touchscreen. See Upheaval’s accessibility page for more information on how to navigate with text-to-speech.
- Added dynamic random events that happen in the village. Hopefully these will help point players looking for direction towards interesting things they could do next!
- Added more clues to the overlook.
- Graphical version: Added an option to provide visual aids to navigate to the map marker location, if you have a map marker set.
- Added extra description to the location that the mysterious letter leads you to, and to the current location you’ve marked on your map (if any).
- Graphical version: Added tutorial instructions and button/key prompts for controller and keyboard inputs.
- Added new shortcuts for keyboard and controller inputs.
- Added tutorial instructions to each item you can choose at the beginning, so you know what you can do with them all once you have them.
- Command line version: Added “Send game logs to developer” option in Settings.
- Added new songs: Spirits of the Greenwood and Mourning Melodies, both by Alexander Nakarada.
- Added a hidden slugrat to the game.
Changes:
- Graphical version: Locked the map marker to pre-determined node locations.
- Made it easier to get to the top of the tower when the wraith is there.
- Removed “Keep looking” loop at the overlook (turns out it was confusing rather than helpful).
- Graphical version: Game now starts in maximized windowed mode by default now, instead of borderless fullscreen.
- The wraith no longer chases you when you’re transformed.
- Made button tooltips affected by drunkenness.
- Made catching fireflies take longer if you are cursed or transformed.
- Deleting or viewing a different page in the journal is now automatically saved.
- Closed off the manor for now: it’s under some serious construction!
- Updated what happens to the goblins’ prisoner after you release them to be closer to what I want the final version to look like. :)
- Stopped the journal from adding duplicate pages in a row.
- Demo versions: Clarified that you WILL meet the Magician at the end of 15 days.
- Command line version: When you type an invalid command, the invalid command is reprinted in the warning, to help players who rely on their screen reader to figure out what went wrong faster.
- Improved descriptions and fixed typos throughout.
Bug Fixes:
- Fixed a bug where the villagers think you’re visible when when you’re invisible during the night vigil (thanks Xvordan!).
- Fixed a bug where random rumor and bandit rumors in town show up as blank sometimes after asking about them many times (thanks Xvordan!).
- Fixed a bug where the Records button on the main menu wouldn’t show up if you hadn’t unlocked the Magician’s Diary yet.
- Fixed a bug where the number of days left in some parts of the game was wrong when relaxed mode was enabled (thanks Xvordan!).
- Fixed a bug where the wraith would follow you into a burial mound when there were fireflies flying just outside.
- Fixed lots of very minor bugs, many of which I’m sure I created.
