The "And They Call It A Mine" Update (Upheaval Alpha Version 0.0.24)


The Mines Update is here!! (v0.0.24) Explore new secrets in the mines, its entrance buried half-way up the mountains; join the goblins, and try out a bunch of new accessibility quality of life features. Try it out on itch.io or on Steam. I hope you enjoy! 🥳

If you own the alpha version, download the new update from itch.io or Google Play. To get an email when the full game is done, wishlist Upheaval on Steam.

After you download the update, start a new game to try out the new content. If you want a completely fresh experience, clear everything using the “Delete all save data” option in Settings.

Highlights from this update

Additions:

  • New region: The Mines, with 12 randomized locations with shifting passages connecting them.
  • A new secret treasure hidden in the mines.
  • A secret room hidden in the mines containing a valuable reward of your choice.
  • A nameless terror that roams the mines, looking for lost travelers such as yourself.
  • Added a rusty lantern to use in the mines.
  • Added several more encounters with the ruby-eyed squirrel.
  • Added ability to join the goblins!
  • Added new ways to bribe the goblins.
  • Added new rumors in town.
  • Added more interactions with the billy goat in the mountains.
  • Added minor secrets to the hermit’s hut.
  • Added new clues about the mines.
  • Alpha only: Added “Back to Menu” option to end of game.
  • Graphical version: Added ability to change text-to-speech voice to any installed voice.
  • Graphical version: Added a setting to Read All Text at Once using text-to-speech on Windows, which should be especially helpful for players using the Copy Speech to Clipboard setting.
  • Graphical version: Added Dark Mode and Text-to-speech settings to the first time start-up settings screen.

Changes:

  • Highlight helpful information in the game (can be turned off in settings).
  • Made it less likely you will run into bandits until after you complete your first adventure.
  • Changed Android demo app name to “Demo of Upheaval” to prevent confusion for text-to-speech players.
  • Increased allowable double tap time on Android when using text-to-speech to make triple-tap magnification easier to use.
  • Renamed “Force Portrait Mode” setting to “Change Layout Mode.” Possible options are “Wide” and “Narrow.” Also added a pop-up at game launch for new players so they can choose which layout they prefer before they start to play.
  • Mac versions are now signed with official Apple certificates, so they shouldn’t cause issues with Gatekeeper anymore.
  • Made bandits and goblins drop loose change when defeated. :)
  • Made kitfox easier and more interesting to follow. (Thank you, Olivia!)
  • Most map marker navigation is now hidden while you’re actually standing in the tallgrass.
  • Tweaked sequence when entering the inhospitable goblin territory.
  • Increased detail of relationship statuses in the end-of-game adventure records.
  • Graphical version: Text-to-speech speaks the current time after the current location when either the current time or location changes.
  • Android only: Targeting Android SDK 35 now to be compliant with Google’s requirements.
  • Graphical version: Made UI crisper on higher resolution screens.
  • Made Spacebar do all the same things as the Enter key.
  • Android only: Made manor look better when covered in dust.
  • Improved and clarified many text-to-speech descriptions.
  • Improved descriptions and fixed typos throughout.

Bug Fixes:

  • Graphical version: Fixed a critical text-to-speech bug where ALL options were narrated as taking “No time.” Sorry everyone, this is fixed now! (Thank you, Jay!)
  • Fixed a bug where the time would be wrong when viewing past encounters (it should show the time of the encounter, but it was showing the current time before).
  • Fixed manor rooms getting dusty FAR sooner and far more often than was intended. (Thank you, Carrie!)
  • Fixed bug so map marker tutorial pop-up no longer shows up when opening location maps (such as the mines, tower, cave, or manor), which do not allow map markers to be placed. o.O
  • Fixed bug where gaining 10+ travel kits (say, from the goblin caves or the bandit’s hideout) would grant you 0 travel kits instead.
  • Graphical version: Fixed bug where map marker would not show path on the map when inside the hermit’s hut or the badger’s burrow.
  • Fixed bug so now bandits will always move their hideout after you attack them at their hideout and you lose.
  • Fixed bug where some ranger text would not appear correctly if you attacked the bandits with your bare hands while tutorials were turned off.
  • Fixed some goblin and ranger interactions when invisible.
  • Fixed error where, for some players, pressing Tab on the main menu with TTS on would open Discord in their browser. Every. Single. Time. (Thank you Xvordan and everyone else who reported this!)
  • Fixed awkward ranger introduction when the first time you meet the ranger is when they sneak up on you when you’re sleeping. (Thank you, Undrhil!)
  • Fixed a bug where the billy goat would sometimes run off as you were approaching it but then you could still interact with it.
  • Fixed a bug where one group of bandits would recognize you the first time you met them if you had already met the other group of bandits. (Thank you Lundis!)
  • Fixed a bug where bandits would extremely rarely ambush you in weird places after meeting the undead warriors.
